“Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. What’s this all about?

The meaning of “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen:

What he sings:

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
No escape from reality

What he means:

Something about me seems “wrong” or contradictory to my real life.  I can’t escape these real feelings I’m having for other men.

What he sings:

Open your eyes,
Look up to the skies and see,
I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy,
Because I’m easy come, easy go,
Little high, little low,
Any way the wind blows doesn’t really matter to
me, to me

What he means:

I now see the truth. I’m gay. I’m done fighting these sexual urges. I’m just going to go with the flow and see where it takes me.

What he sings:

Mama,
I just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger
now he’s dead
Mama… life had just begun,
But now I’ve gone and thrown it all away
Mamaaaaa oooh,
Didn’t mean to make you cry,
If I’m not back again this time tomorrow,
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters

What he means:

Uh oh. I just put my gun (wink, wink) to another man’s head and let it all out. I need to confess to my girlfriend, Mary Austin, about what I’ve done and who I am.  For years, I’ve pretended to be a heterosexual in a committed relationship. But I am not nor can I ever be that person again. I’m sorry Mary for killing the man you thought I was. I’m sorry I ruined our future together.  I have to leave now. Please just forget I existed. Just go on without me.

What he sings:

Too late, my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine, body’s aching all
the time
Goodbye, ev’rybody, I’ve got to go,
Got to leave you all behind and face the truth
Mamaaaaa oooh,
I don’t want to die,
I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all

What he means:

The guilt of disappointing you is heartbreaking. Leaving hurts me so much. I wish I was different but this is how I was born. I have to go face the judgement of the world now.

What they sing:

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouche! Scaramouche! Will you do the
Fandango?!
Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very frightening
Galileo, Galileo
Galileo, Galileo
Galileo, Figaro – magnifico

What they mean:

He’s an artist, eccentric and, worse yet, he’s gay! Gay is different and we fear different. Ask Galileo how we treat people who think differently. He spent the last years under house arrest for openly believing Earth wasn’t the center of the universe. Imagine what we would have done to him if he was gay.

What he sings:

I’m just a poor boy, nobody loves me
He’s just a poor boy from a poor family,
Spare him his life from this monstrosity!
Easy come, easy go, will you let me go

What he means:

I’m merely human. Please don’t hate me. I want to be free!

What they sing:

Bismilah! No, we will not let you go
(Let him go!) Bismilah! We will not let you go
(Let him go!) Bismilah! We will not let you go
(Let me go) Will not let you go
(Let me go)(Never) Never let you go
(Let me go) Never let you go (Let me go) Ah
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia, let me go
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me,
for meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

What they mean:

You are under the devil’s spell! With God on our side, we will never let a homosexual live free!

What he sings:

So you think you can stop me and spit in my
eye?!?!
So you think you can love me and leave me to
die?!?!
Oh, baby, can’t do this to me, baby,
Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta
here!

What he means:

I am who I am. I’m done apologizing. If being gay makes you stop loving me then that’s your problem. Your judgement doesn’t mean shit.

What he sings:

Nothing really matters, Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters,
Nothing really matters to me…

Anyway the wind blows…

What he means:

I keep telling myself that leaving my heterosexual life is the right move but it still hurts. **Sigh**

Now let’s see where these feelings take me.
